Q&A: CAROSESA – VEGAN CAROB AND TAHINI SPREAD

We spoke to food and travel author, freelance writer and broadcaster Yasemen Kaner-White:

What is Carosesa?
Carosesa is a unique, versatile, healthy, plant-based, two-ingredient product. Premium pure carob and tahini (both sourced from the sunny Mediterranean are combined and cold stirred to keep the goodness in.

What inspired you to create Carosesa?
My father is Turkish Cypriot, so whenever I visited my family in Cyprus, my auntie would always have carob molasses in her cupboard; I remember the first time I mixed it with tahini and dunked in a piece of warm local bread – it was delicious, so much so, it inspired me to fill my suitcase with molasses and recreate it at home.

Why did you choose to make a Vegan spread in particular?
I was tired of picking up so-called healthy plant-based spreads, turning the jar around and seeing a list of unhealthy, unnatural ingredients. I was determined to create a versatile, pure, premium spread, which would be unique and utilitarian. And so Carosesa was born. I am also delighted Carosesa is sustainable and produces no food wastage; the sesame is used whole and the carob pods, once the molasses is extracted, are given to animals as feed.

How is it best to eat Carosesa?
Carosesa is perfect spread on your favourite bread. Personally, my favourite is on toasted sourdough. It’s delicious on a toasted crumpet, topped with black currants and sorrel, or for a savoury flavour, try a Kobez flatbread topped with Carosesa, hummus, radish salad and za’atar.

You could add it in a smoothie for a natural hit of iron and calcium; we have a receipe on our website.

You can also use Carosesa as an ingredient in baking; have a look at our vegan Rice Krispie recipe. Or try a dollop of it on coconut yogurt with a medley of fresh berries, on your favourite vegan ice-cream for a yummy treat, in porridge or even served savoury on a vegan cheese board. The possibilities are endless.

Tried and tested recipes from chefs are regularly posted on the website.

What next for Carosesa?
Currently we are exploring flavour combinations, which would be natural and plant-based, of course. We are also talking to some very well known major retailors; watch this space!
