IS THE END OF THE WORLD NIGH?
IS
By Jason Chan
Because the Mayan calendar ends on 21.12.12, some people are heralding the end of the world. Do I think that Planet Earth is going to self-destruct any time soon? No! Do I believe that we are about to enter into a new era that will offer us a wonderful opportunity to live together in peace and harmony? I certainly hope so!
Unfortunately, at the beginning of the 21st century, the consciousness of the majority of people is still far too low for them to live with one another in peace and harmony. But I have noticed a big change in our society in the 30 years or so that I have been on my own spiritual path.
30 years ago, meditation was considered very weird. Now, meditation even features in ads on TV. More and more individuals are searching for something beyond the endless, and ultimately futile, search for more and more material pleasures. If you are reading this piece, you are probably one of them.
I strongly believe that the only way to create a truly more peaceful and harmonious planet is to go within and heal our own deep sense of lack and unworthiness. Unless we are prepared to look very honestly at our own inner fear, hatred and unworthiness, I doubt very much that we will ever experience a world without hatred or fear. But if we are brave enough to see that all of the world’s problems start in our own closed hearts and unhealed minds, we can become incredibly inspiring pioneers of a new and quite miraculous way of living.
Now just think what the whole world might be like if the majority of people were motivated primarily, if not wholly, by the desire to serve others. What if most individuals were no longer driven by an unhealed egoic desire for fame or fortune? Wouldn’t the world be a wonderful place in which to live, if the majority of people living in our midst had the outlook and behaviour of Saints?
This does sound quite far fetched doesn’t it? But I have now seen enough of my own spiritual students transform in front of my very eyes from self-centred individuals into genuinely compassionate and generous individuals, to know without a shadow of a doubt that spiritual practices, such a meditation, could one day transform the whole world.
So if you really want to see a new era for humankind dawn at the end of 2012, please make a commitment now to do something each and every day to decrease your inner fear and anger and increase your inner peace and joy. You may only be one person out of over 7 billion human being on planet earth, but as I always tell my students ‘Every effort counts’ and as a major supermarket keeps telling us ‘Every little helps’.
