BORROW A GREEN ENERGY FILLED BATTERY FOR YOUR PHONE

Running low on battery power while you are out and about? Hugo Tilmouth, CEO and founder of ChargedUp has a green solution …

Please tell us what you do:
ChargedUp has developed a network of dispensing stations that allow users to borrow a battery pack, charge their mobile device and return the battery, using green energy through a partnership with Ecotricity.

Located in venues such as restaurants, cafes, transport hubs, sports stadiums, and tourist attractions; users will never be far from a ChargedUp station.

ChargedUp is unique and innovative in a number of ways; not only are we the world’s first battery sharing network powered by green energy, we also aim to disrupt the global market of “dumb” power banks with our smart shareable model. ChargedUp uses the sharing economy model, just like Airbnb, Uber, JustPark and Ofo bikes.

With London’s ‘Boris Bikes’ familiarising Londoners with this model, ChargedUp aims to expand quickly to provide a cheaper, eco-friendly and more convenient service – one that solves the all too common problem of running out of charge on the go.

The ChargedUp platform allows users to connect in a tangible way with green energy on a device they use daily.

What inspired you to create ChargedUp?
I have a background in cleantech and startups, as well as a Masters in Renewable Energy Engineering. I am particularly interested in the sharing economy. ChargedUp was formed out of a personal problem of constantly running out of power on the go, combined with the desire to create a sustainable solution to this problem.

What problem does ChargedUp solve?
ChargedUp solves the problem of mobile phones dying when users are out and about. The ChargedUp stations enable anyone to borrow a battery pack, charge their device and then return the battery to any of our stations.

ChargedUp benefits our partner venues by helping drive footfall to their venues and advertising their services via the ChargedUp app to thousands of potential customers.

ChargedUp benefits our users by providing them a flexible and convenient solution to keep their mobile devices charged.

How does ChargedUp help the environment?
ChargedUp was set-up around the principle of being green from start to the finish. By utilising the concept of the sharing economy we can reduce the number of power banks that need to be produced, as many people can share our batteries exactly when they need them, rather than each person buying a battery to use only occasionally.

We then use energy offsetting to ensure the network is backed with green energy through a partnership with Ecotricity. Therefore, each time you borrow a battery to charge your phone with ChargedUp you increase the investment in green energy by allowing Ecotricity to invest in further Wind Turbines and Solar panels.

Finally, when the batteries reach the end of their life we have committed to recycle them to ensure we minimize the impact of our company on the environment.

How can I find my nearest ChargedUp station?
To find a ChargedUp station just download our app “ChargedUp” and it will show you the nearest stations around you. You can then visit a venue, borrow a battery and charge your mobile phone.

 What next for you?
ChargedUp is currently located in London, but is quickly expanding across the capital. We plan to expand to other cities in the UK as well as expanding internationally in the next year.
