AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINT THAT’S KIND TO THE EYE AS WELL AS THE PLANET
David Simpson is co-founder and technical director of Andersen EV, a UK based company making sophisticated electric charge points for all electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars. David is responsible for the overall business development and driving the technical aspects of our charge points.
What inspired you to create Andersen EV?
Back in 2016, I’d just got my first electric car, but I couldn’t find a charge point that I liked. All the charge points on the market were plastic and looked really basic. I wanted something that looked good fixed to the side of my home. So, it is a classic case of being frustrated with what’s available and thinking others must feel the same. I knew a bit about electronics and design from when I use to make high-end hi-fi. I started to research the market and knew there was an opportunity to make a difference.
Why are beautiful Electric Vehicle charging points important – we already have functional ones, so what difference will a pretty design make to the environment?
Once you’ve realized that you need a charge point, it becomes obvious pretty quickly that (unlike your car!) it doesn’t move; it’s actually a static product attached to your property. In other words, it is on show 24/7. For this reason, we wanted to create a design that looks nice on the side of your home. The charge point design needs to be sympathetic to the architectural environment that it sits within. We believe that charging isn’t a means to an end, it should also make you feel good and good design makes you feel better.
For those living in period homes or within areas of conservation, it is nice to be able to choose a wood finish or a certain complementary colour. It is great to see the wood fronts looking so natural – because they are!
EV charging points help people to be greener, but what about the charging points themselves – how green is the manufacture, the materials used and the end of life?
We are first charge point maker to offer charge points with a wood finish. We use Accoya which is 100% non-toxic, recyclable wood that comes from sustainably sourced and managed forests.
Notably, Accoya is a wood that exceeds the durability of most hardwoods which gives it a really long lifespan. I always wanted to build things that last and I’m happy to pay a bit more if it means it lasts longer. In technology terms, I make sure that every system we put in is upgradeable.
How do you see electric vehicles and charging points developing over the next decade?
I think that the adoption of the electric vehicle will be faster than people anticipate. There is a growing awareness of the environment as well as increasing fuel costs and people understanding that electric cars are actually a much more elegant, simple and more civilized vehicle. The transition in people perception will be huge.
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is also helped with the legislation and taxation laws that will make vehicles very cost effective for the user.
EV users are going to continue to want convenient ways to charge their vehicle at home and or work.
What next for you/your range?
Product-wise we have a new floor-mounted charge point called the Andersen P1 launching for homes and businesses. It really showcases the Scandinavian inspired design and quality and technology standards that we are known for. Furthermore, we are expanding our charge points into Europe.
